March 28 2011 -- Follow the Plan...Strategically Please!

In my last column I wrote a somewhat tongue-in-cheek fantasy piece about what I thought London might or should look like in the year 2025. I was surprised at how many emails and tweets I received from individuals who shared that vision and encouraged immediate action to make it (the fantasy) happen.
One could argue that a number of things are now underway that could accomplish, in part at least, what we fantasy seekers are looking for. The recent wrap up to the Mayor's Economic Council (MEC) meeting contained many suggestions including but not limited to how to improve the core, increase our capacity along the 401/402 corridor, fix our downtown parking dilemma, and embrace the arts as an economic generator. Add to this the enhancement of our research and hospital facilities and our outstanding post-secondary institutions and you could argue that London could indeed realize all of those fantasies and more.
The trick in all of this will be to start with a clear and universal vision of what we want our city to be in 2025 and 2050. In other words we need the long-awaited, often referred to but never materialized Strategic Plan from which ALL other plans must hang. Done correctly, a Strategic Plan forces you to co-ordinate all other plans including, the Downtown Master Plan, the London Transit Plan, the Master Parking Plan for the Core, the Growth Boundaries Plan, The Transportation Master Plan, and every other darn plan that comes along including of course the annual operations and budget plans of the City. These plans must all sing to each other and when sung from the same song sheet...voila, a masterpiece!
As it is now, many, if not most of these plans are disconnected from each other making it extremely difficult to achieve any kind of efficiency or shared vision for the City. I, for one, am optimistic that the MEC's report will contain a very strong recommendation for the development of this much-needed City of London Strategic Plan. Perhaps then, and only then we can begin to move this City in the direction we need to in order to achieve our full potential as one of Canada's great cities.
Hopefully the Mayor's call for a downtown stakeholder's meeting will also adopt this same type of all- inclusive philosophy.
Incidentally, with respect to the recently announced Strategic Plan for the Western Fair Association, I know this group very well and I know its CEO, Hugh Mitchell very well too. This is an organization that has its act together and over that last decade or so has turned the sleepy old Western Fair grounds into one of the most dynamic and versatile powerhouse entertainment complexes in the country. Much of this was achieved in partnership with the City of London. That the Western Fair Board is now looking to expand their horizons would be cause for applause in most circles. The mere fact that they indeed have a plan gets my hands clapping right out of the gate.
My suggestion to appease the naysayers -- let's relax and wait until they (the Western Fair) have actually completed the plan beyond its draft stage and then in the words of our Mayor, their plan will build on the City's plans - not compete with it. Bravo to that!
On the election fronts, is it just me or do things seem unusually quiet out of both the McGuinty and Hudak camps? I do have it right don't I? There is a provincial election this fall isn't there? Just sayin'.
And on the federal scene, you can expect the rhetoric to hit full stride soon as all parties are jockeying for positions and of course your votes. Will it be a nasty affair with all sides slinging mud in all directions? I wouldn't want to speculate on that but I do believe I will haul out my Teflon suit for the remainder of the election season. Again...just sayin'.

How to Startup Before You Startup :: Small Business Marketing Blog from Duct Tape Marketing

If you’re thinking about starting a business or even if you’ve already started one, don’t spend your time fussing over spreadsheets, logos, budgets or competition.

Packed house on opening day

Those are all parts of the puzzle, but if you want to build a business that cannot fail, spend what may feel like an exorbitant amount of time focused on building and nourishing a community.

I know you’ve got to pay the bills, but get this part right and you’ll never have to worry about having enough business.

In a perfect world, every business would spend a year or so doing nothing but community building before they ever opened the doors.

Google Testing Email Marketing Technique Inside Adwords

Google Testing Email Marketing Technique Inside Adwords

Google tests new things all the time. They have to in order to figure out the best way to deliver ads to visitors as well as the best way to get those visitors to engage in those ads so advertisers keep paying Google for the chance to be there.

Oftentimes these tests are minor and can go relatively unnoticed but this latest effort is pretty interesting and quite differnt, at least from my perspective.

Google is testing whether prospects will ask for more information via their Gmail account which is already filled in for the email address to be used for the offer. Similar tests have been running around building newsletter lists but this move to offers marks a different approach. Here is what it looks like

Weddings | Vicki Bartel Photography Blog - Windsor Ontario Wedding Photographer, London, Toronto, Southwestern Ontario & Destination Weddings

It was a typical double date. Megan and Chris found themselves on a movie date set up by Chris’ brother. Chris was quiet, nervous and didn’t say much that night.  Megan wondered if he liked her.
It didn’t take long for them to realize they had something special. And six years ago, when her grandmother passed away, Chris flew from Vancouver to Windsor to be with her on that evening. Perhaps it was a defining moment in their relationship, perhaps it was then she realized how much he cared.
Megan and I had a few classes together in university, and I remember thinking, “how is this girl so nice?” Really, no one can be THAT nice! And I’ve come to learn that she really is one of a kind – a girl with the kindest, sweetest spirit, which no doubt is one of the things that Chris loves about her.
Megan and Chris, I don’t even know where to begin talking about your wedding. Let me just say that when you walk into the rehearsal, and you feel so welcomed by the families – that’s when you know it’s going to be a good one.  The way you planned every single detail, and yet were so easy going on the actual day blew me away.

That One Little Thing

Did you know that there will be that one little thing that will go wrong at your wedding?
"What!?", you say with shock and horror. How could anything go wrong with my perfectly planned, fairytale wedding? Easily ... since you are the bride and everyone expects you to stand around looking beautiful, making the whole wedding thing look like a walk in the park. Meanwhile, you feel like the success of your of wedding depends on whether or not the reception hall folded the napkins the right way, or if the photographer takes that picture of you with your grandmother’s poodle, or...
Oh, the list goes on and on and on. Let’s face it, we’re all neurotic. Yes, it’s our quest for perfection that can change us from the beautiful, fun, energetic sex goddess that he proposed to into the frizzy haired, wild eyed lunatic he will soon call his wife. So let's see if we can’t change the way you will look at “the one little thing” that will go wrong on your wedding day.
What could possibly go wrong, you ask...
"When I arrived at the church with my father, my cousin came up to inform me that the harpist that I had hired to play during the ceremony did not arrive. There was no one there to play music to accompany my walk down the aisle. After a great deal of panicking with no solution in sight, my father reminded me that my guests where there to see me get married not to hear some harpist play. I walked down the aisle on the arm of my father in total silence. It was actually rather beautiful. At the end of the service, many people commented on how dramatic it was of me to scorn the traditional church service by eliminating the music portion. Everyone thought that I did it on purpose. All’s well that ends well."
"When my husband and I got married, we had our two nieces standing in as our flower girls. They were both precious in their miniature bridal gowns. Everyone in the crowd was enchanted by these little dolls. Throughout the ceremony they were perfectly behaved. On the advice of our minister, we allowed the girls to roam the front of the church and talk amongst themselves and our other guests. They made a delightful addition to our wedding - until the minister got to the part of the ceremony where he asks if anyone knows just cause why these two people should not be married... Our youngest little angel yells out the top of her lungs, 'Daddy, I have to go poopy!' Needless to say the solemnity of the moment was broken, and my brother-in-law had to leave his place in line with the ushers to take our little sweetie to the washroom. It was several minutes before the audience could stop laughing and pay attention. Oh, well, at least the wedding video is a never ending source of entertainment."
Keeping focus
Your wedding day is supposed to be about the joining of two people who love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. So now that you are focused on what really matters, take the events of your wedding day in stride - good and bad. Enjoy the good moments and if something doesn't go exactly according to plan (very likely), do your best to handle the situation calmly. Laughter is always the best way of dealing with things! The kinks in your day will turn into the most memorable parts of the wedding.

I knew Jen and Steve would be a great couple to work with when we met and chatted at the wedding show back last January. They were so real, down to earth, and laid back -  I instantly was looking  forward to photographing their big day.
Their late fall wedding was perfection. With the exception of a few raindrops that decided to show up during our photo time outside. I was waiting for Jen to panic, pick up her dress, and run for the nearest available shelter. But instead, they both just shrugged it off and went with the flow. And I liked them even more then.
So Jen and Steve, thanks for being so amazing and fun to work with. Your wedding was truly delightful and I coudln’t have pictured a better way to finish off the year. Much love…

International conference in London aims to improve global health

London, ON -Whether it’s contamination leading to chronic disease on Walpole Island near Sarnia, or the detrimental health effects of cotton farming half-way around the world in India, the environment has a direct link to health.  Ecohealth is just one of the themes being tackled in a conference being held by Western University’s Office of Global Health at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.  “Transcending Borders: Towards Global Health,” runs Friday, April 27 to Sunday, April 29 at the London Convention Centre.
Ecohealth will be discussed by an international panel, moderated by Dr. John Howard of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, on Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the convention centre’s theatre.
“This conference will change the way we think of global health.  We want to create a vibrant forum that encourages the exchange of knowledge, and networking, to foster change in matters related to international health care, marginalized communities, education, ecohealth, and advocacy and policy.” says Dr. Neil Arya, Director of the Office for Global Health.
The conference brings together academics, activists, researchers and educations to try to find solutions to global health problems.  Some of the notable speakers include:
  • Izzeldin Abuelaish –Nobel Peace Prize nominee, author of “I Shall Not Hate,” and founder of Daughters for Life
  • Pakisa Tshimika –Public health specialist from Congo who lost several family members to HIV/AIDS, and suffered his own debilitating spine injury

London-based HRdownloads recognized as best workplace in Canada for second year in a row - London Economic Development Corporation

London-based HRdownloads recognized as best workplace in Canada for second year in a row

April 19, 2012 (London, ON): For the second year in a row, HRdownloads has been recognized as one of the Best Workplaces in Canada by the Great Place to Work Institute and Your Workplace magazine.
“If you put your people first, the profits will follow,” said Tony Boyle, founder and president of HRdownloads, a London, Ontario human resources research and advisory firm.
“This award means a lot to us,” said HRdownloads Mr. Boyle. “In many ways, it’s one of the best measures of success you can have.”
“Maybe it sounds like a cliché,” said Mr. Boyle.”But the biggest asset any company has is its people.”
“There’s an unfortunate attitude in business today that you have to be hard-hearted towards your staff in order to compete,” said Mr. Boyle. “Winning this award a second straight year, and being financially successful in the process, proves that idea is wrong.”
“We believe respect and decency are assets in business,” he said. “You can keep your human values, treat your people well, and still come out on top.”
HRdownloads’ sustained growth has been an unusual success story in difficult economic times. Its revenue has increased over a thousand percent since 2008. That growth earned it the No. 10 spot in this year’s PROFIT HOT 50 ranking.
The company, which is Canada’s fastest growing producer of human resources documents and templates, now has over 7,000 clients nationwide.
“The key to that success has been finding good people who work well together and creating an atmosphere where they look forward to coming to work every day,” said Mr. Boyle.
“We’re always telling our clients about the value of hanging onto good people,” he said. “We try hard to practise what we preach.”
The basis for this award, as well as the “Top Workplaces Where Employees Thrive” award the company won in 2011 was feedback from randomly selected employees, as well as an in-depth review of the organization's culture, including HR policies and procedures.
“We’re fortunate to have a fantastic group of people who love their jobs, love where they work, and who want to succeed together,” he said.
The company started in 2005 with three employees, but now employs over 80 people, almost double the number at this time last year.
To accommodate its constant growth, HRdownloads moved last summer from to a new office building in London’s downtown core with more than twice the space and room for expected future expansion.
Despite the rapid growth, the company has managed to hang onto its small-company atmosphere, said Mr. Boyle. Events like karaoke contests and afternoons at the bowling alley on the company’s tab have paid huge dividends in productivity.
There are more serious events as well. The company’s staff enthusiastically throws its support behind charitable causes and routinely raises more money than organizations many times its size.
“The serious events are maybe even more important than the fun ones,” said Mr. Boyle. “There’s a great sense of satisfaction in working together for a good cause.”
About HRdownloads
HRdownloads is a privately held London-based company, founded in 2005.
HRdownloads is focused on providing HR professionals and small businesses with essential tools and information to effectively manage human capital. HRdownloads saves clients time by assisting them in making informed business decisions through creative product development, customer service and user friendliness.

Insights from two of our team members in China

26 Apr 2012

Today, I thought I would post some insights from two our Team London members that are currently with us in China. The first one is from Andrea Feddema of Ernst and Young and the second is from Barry Cleaver of Siskinds.
Submitted by Andrea Feddema:
With this being my first trip to Asia I cannot help but be amazed by the sheer size and scale of the cities of Chengdu and Chongqing. The city of Chongqing alone has a population greater than Canada exceeding 30 million. While our countries differ in the size of our cities it is clear to me that the importance of relationships and face to face meetings to business is shared across our cultures. We have had the opportunity to share insights on doing business in each other's countries, both through our formal presentations and our informal meetings. I am encouraged by the tangible opportunities I see to do business with the Chinese chamber members we have met who are considering doing business in London. Putting on my hat as a Chamber board member I am very proud of our London Chamber of commerce team. As always, Gerry does an excellent job on behalf of the London Chamber and of course is keeping us all in line. Also, Lily has truly outdone herself in making the trip run smoothly, and of course proudly representing our ABOC committee! It is interesting to see the level of respect that the chambers of commerce command in China and what an important role they play in business and also education. Last but not least it has been a pleasure to travel with the City of London delegates who are hard at work every time you turn around; they can often be seen at the end of a very busy day writing their blogs in train stations, bus shelters or airplane terminals.
